One of the most anticipated reads of 2017 for many of us.
This one surprisingly lived up to most of the hype surrounding it and even surprised me a few times.

I enjoyed the plot twist of this YA novel. I liked the secret organization plot, it was unique and entertaining. However, I felt that for a novel that was exploring finding one's authentic self, the characters fell flat. Additionally, I would have liked more history on the LIC, which empires were brought down? And apparently I'm the only one, but it did bother me the time of day during the carnival scene didn't make sense. If Caden was truly supposed to be going to bed, why was he worried that someone from school would see him and Dylan at the carnival? And if it was so late, why was a four-year old there?
I enjoyed the overall concept, it was interesting to see how a male character would respond to being judged only by looks, and being valued only as a husband.
I think there were a lot of instances of things working out a little too perfectly, too many coincidences. The secondary characters aren't very well fleshed-out. The ending is quickly done, abrupt, and not believable. However, it is a quick read and engaging, so if your expectations are not too high this could be worth it.

This book ended up on my list via some other list. I wasn't sure what to expect. It was entertaining but a little predictable.
I would give this 3.5 stars actually - could have used a heavier editorial hand to cut superfluous description etc but very compelling story and solid YA sci fi. Came to it as part of my daughter-led book club (she’s 13), but finished it at 2am. :)
This was fun to read. Couldn't put it down, even though there were too many times at certain points things made no sense or the writing style felt juvenile. In all honesty, it felt like I was reading fanfiction. The story is entertaining nonetheless if you can look past the books many flaws.
