A meaningful book but not one I'd read again. Maybe it is just too painful? It is deeply intimate, which is admirable, and hard to extract yourself from.

beautiful, quiet, raw, devastating - this is a tough exploration of the author’s mother and her murder by an abusive stepfather when the author was only 19.

I didn't know Natasha Trethewey's poetry, but this memoir was recommended to me by a friend. It was extremely sad, and frustratingly so since the police could have prevented her mom's death. It feels odd to say this was beautifully written given the brutal topic, but it was. The replay of the phone calls were especially disturbing.

An incredible memoir on horrific events.

A stunning, stunning memoir that grapples with memory, trauma, and a mother daughter relationship in light of the tragedy of the mother's death.
