Paolini shines in world building. I literally picked up this series again because I wanted to live through his eyes of how he built Alagaesia and visit the cities that he had crafted. Sequences where it’s just Eragon and Saphira figuring out shit or fighting storms are poetic and beautiful.

And the plot culmination was good too but the death of Galbatorrix felt like I’d seen it a bunch of times.

I recalled it wrongly because I remember thinking Eragon left Alagaesia because he was fated to and just kinda followed it along. But it’s good to see some agency. And his growth has been lovely. From an immature creep to a respectful lover.

And there’s a new book out since I last read it! So on to the next!

Well, it was good but definitely not great. I think it should have ended maybe a hundred or so pages earlier and done a quicker job tying up the loose ends. I really loved the first two books, and enjoyed the third (although I had thought it was supposed to end there and was quite surprised when it didn't!)

Bonne lecture ! ✨

DID NOT FINISH

I went to absolutely adoring this series in fifth grade to abhorring it as a tiny teen by the time the last one was out. Not even the nostalgia could save it, the drop in quality was THAT sharp. Chris, you should've listened to your editor.
