I was not expecting this book to be as good as it was. In the past I’d written the author off as overhyped, but I’m glad I went ahead and gave this book a chance because boy was it worth it! I really loved the plot, the characters and just the overall tone of the story. The FMC didn’t fall into the overwritten, whiny, “I’m plain but somehow drop dead gorgeous” variety that I loathe, and the MMC wasn’t broody and monosyllabic. It’s hands down one of the better vampire or werewolf books I’ve read in years. My only gripe with it is that for a “duet”, the male narration is very underutilized and kept to the epitaphs and epilogue which is annoying! If you’re looking for a good supernatural read with an actual plot, and spice that adds to the story instead of detracts, then I highly recommend adding this one to your TBR!

This was a reread and this time I did it as an immersion read with the audio. Things I definitely liked were the banter and Lowe was lovable. There was empathy for Misery. I almost thought I was going to increase my initial rating of this book. My turn off for this book was the spice. I would have like to have had more pages on the plot line and less on the spice. If you are looking for a decent light mystery with spice then you will like this one.

This reads like somewhat well written fan fiction, which considering the authors history makes sense. That being said it’s a quick, easy read that I couldn’t put down. I do want to note I was well aware of the weird sex thing in this before picking it up.
I’m docking a star for two reason, first the dialogue and over use of metaphor is super cringey at times. It’s romance so it can be forgiven but the I’m super smart, SAT word salad of metaphor annoyed me (I know Hazelwood is a scientist but being a scientist myself I hate we they feel the need to prove how smart they are this way. I very much doubt a sheltered computer scientist knows the term dizygotic twin).
Second major reason is a bit more petty. Look I’m no prude, I’ve read more ABO fanfic then most people can conceive of (it’s a bit of a guilty pleasure), but in my experience there is an unspoken rule in that genre that you don’t explain it, it just happens and everyone’s either fine with it or not, depending on how dark the fic is. The very matter of fact explanation in this book kind of took me out of it. It’s necessary in context because I’m sure most people reading this have never read fan fic, where things like this are stated at the top so you know what your getting into, but I just didn’t like it. Still I enjoyed this book and read it in about 24hrs.
