Dammit, I loved this book.

At first, I didn’t like how the paranormal species were more biologically explained, mostly because it felt like the Vampyres in particular were hamstrung. However, I did come to appreciate this after a short bit. After all, magic is just science we don’t understand yet.

I also initially hated Misery’s name but it just kind of bled into the background as I got into the book and it stopped being noticed entirely.

Overall, I freaking loved this book. I loved all of the characters. They were all interesting and I cared about everyone to some degree. Both the main characters were exactly what I like to see in my main characters. Ana is a gem. The writing style was excellent, witty, and funny. I didn’t see the twist of
who the real antagonist was, though I knew it obviously wouldn’t be who we were led to believe. I just didn’t manage to figure out who it really was or why until the reveal.
The mystery was great.

Lowe’s misguided self-sacrificing was a bit cliché but I honestly let it slide because everything else about this book was so excellent and it was such a small part of the story. Who can really blame such a par for the course staple of this type of romance story, anyway?

This book was fun. I liked what we got of the world building, though I wish we had gotten more. In specific, I liked that "finding your mate" was not the end-all and be-all of the weres' lives, and that it was not always reciprocal. I thought that was a good set up for some really interesting character dynamics (though not really well explored in this book), as well as counteracting the "fated lovers" trope that I tend to be a bit annoyed by in paranormal and fantasy romance books. I thought the characters were fun and likeable. The pacing felt a bit off, especially in the second half of the book, as
Lowe lying about whether or not Misery was his mate
felt a bit shoehorned in for drama in a plot that really didn't need any more, especially as a lot of the plot lines felt like they were rushed to their conclusions at the end of the book.
