This book is a reckoning with society and culture, written for people living in America who are struggling to find ways to feel and think our ways through the last decade and its implications for the future (read: almost all of us). West mediates America's power structure with candor, humor, passion, and (in appropriate contexts) anger-- and in doing so, creates a roadmap for readers to do the same.

The book is as relevant today as it was the day it was published. If you're looking for a book that will remind you of our common humanity and the necessity of social justice-oriented action against hatred and violence, this book is for you. If you're looking for a book that will remind you that every day is a new day to proudly care about both other people and yourself, this book is for you. If you're looking for a book to serve as escapism, I recommend you return to this one later (perhaps once you've been fortified by a romcom or two).
"This world is beautiful and good and worth saving. Do not despair. Despair is the death of action. Go, act, fight." -Lindy West, The Witches Are Coming

Swear tuh gahd Lindy West is just such a hilarious genius and a wordsmith and a master of discernment and we are so lucky to have her. All the stars.

I appreciate Lindy West's writing style -- she's very funny -- but a full book of it was a lot all at once, especially considering the current political and social media climate. I lean liberal but I basically felt like I was being yelled at for much of of reading this, which is not a feeling I want during my precious book-reading time. I would have enjoyed this more at the pace of about one chapter/column per month so I had a little more time to digest between chapters.
