I’m a million years late to reading this one, and I’m glad I finally did. YA and I don’t often get along these days, but wow.

Definitely a must-read. To be honest, I started reading the book some time in 2021 and it kinda put me in a reading slump despite the fact that I loved the book. I picked it back up a few days ago and flew through the last half.
This book helped me, a white European, understand the struggles of POC in the US a little more. It also gave me hope that things will change and will get better someday.
Starr's struggles to speak out on certain things, finding the courage and also power in fighting for her people, friends and family, sort of reminds me of myself a few years ago and still a little bit now. When she realized that she cannot change who she is or where she's from but she can change something about how people like her get treated by police and government etc., it made me pretty emotional ngl.

An important read, where fiction interesects with reality to deliver a powerful message. Not only that, but it's well written, with a good balance given to the various struggles in Starr's life, and interesting background characters.

There isn’t anything that I can say to do this justice. An absolute must read.
