Trigger-warning to people who want to read this one in the series. This one is particularly disturbing.
Vol. five see the survivors pushing their boundaries outside the relative safety they have developed inside the prison setting. Whilst outside the main complex Rick notices a helicopter crashing in the distance. Seeing this Rick, Glen and Michonne venture out to discover where the helicopter came from and is anyone has survived. Upon arrival at the scene they discover anything of importance has already been removed and there is evidence another group of people got there first. As their car is stuck and night is approaching they decide this other group must be somewhere near by so go in search of answers. This lead them to the town of Woodbury and basically all hell has begun to break lose, with the introduction of The Governor.
Anyone who has seen the TV series will understand this importance and vaguely know what to expect… What I wasn’t prepared for is how evil this villain is in the graphic novels. He is so much worse than I thought he could be and I really fear for the characters. After saying I wasn’t fond of Michonne in the graphic novels I now have new found respect for her. I really hope she gets to wreak some revenge soon. Rick may have seemed crazy in the last volume but I am glad of this now and can’t wait until this story line really gets going.
I really feel like the art work is developing and it definitely has its own feel about it now with characters facial expressions becoming more define as the story progresses. There is a definite feeling of story progression now rather than, these are some people and this is the setting. I feel like there are some drastic things to come in the next volume and really I can’t wait to see what happens.

This is the one that made me realize I was done. It was a slow decline that I just gradually wanted out of the series. It was inevitable as this is not my genre by choice but was fascinated by the popularity of the TV Show and honestly the first book was really good. Maybe its just me but it wandered from an interesting premise to a story building character development in a zombie series.
Content warning for both the book and this review.
This was trauma porn. It depicts horrific violence and rape in a way that is irredeemable. I'd watched past this point in the TV show, but the comics are worse. I won't be reading any more of them after this.

Rick Grimes continues his habit of making the worst, most naive decisions possible for his small (getting smaller) group of survivors. This is also the most graphically violent volume in the series to date, and while Kirkman is creating a society formed of "new rules" driven by the reemergence primitive gender roles, the effort would be easier to appreciate if he were able to somehow craft characters who seem deeper and more emotionally believable. Until then, the series pushes uncomfortably toward using violence for its own sake. The best tragedies balance their lowest depths with flashes of the humor and humanity that is being compromised. Kirkman could benefit from adopting a little of that approach here.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?? I need to know! I like this new development - shows what could have happened to Rick someday if he had continued down the path he was on. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
This volume was INTENSE!!!! I'm just going to say that the t.v. series should have followed more closely to the graphic novel. Rick and the gang are still holding down the fort at the prison. They noticed a helicopter in the sky then watches it crash. Because they aren't horrible people they venture off to search for any survivors. That proved to be a huge mistake because they end up meeting "The Govenor" who's a maniac. Reading this makes me understand about the break down of society and how we as people will behave and or react.
Holy shit!!!! This is my favorite volume so far out of the five I've read! I'm so happy because I really hated the 4th volume and I almost wanted to stop reading but I told myself not to and I kept reading out of curiosity and this fifth volume is amazing! Two words: The Governor. One of the biggest and baddest villains in The Walking Dead history was finally introduced and he is even more terrifying in the comics than he was in the show, and that's hard to believe but it's true! He's scary as fuck. So many things happened in this short volume, it was action packed and exciting!
SPOILERS BELOW
I was so excited when Glenn found the armor suits for him and Rick! Then the helicopter scenes happened and I was so excited as they were tracking down where the helicopter landed and it led them to Woodbury! Finally we meet The Governor who is so insane and creepy. He's one of my favorite villains of all time and it's so exciting to finally see him in this series. As soon as the group meets him they get into a physical fight and The Governor chops off Rick's hand, and Michonne bites his ear off!!!!!!!!! Like what!!!! I had heard that Rick loses his hand i the comics but I never knew how and I can't believe The Governor is the one who did it! That's crazy. Also, in the show Michonne takes out the Governor's eye, but in the comics it's his ear. I find that interesting. The Governor is so unbelievably cruel when he "rapes the dog shit out of Michonne" (those were his actual words). He's a villain who is so easy to hate. Also, why is Carol bat shit crazy in these comics??? She wants to marry Lori and Rick. She's like in love with both of them and she wants to marry both of them and raise Sophia and Carl together like what the fuck!? She's actually crazy. I don't know what to think of it to be honest.
This one is definitely the darkest and most intense volume yet and I absolutely loved it. On to volume 6 now. :)
