Abandon

Meg Cabot

I thought that this was gonna be better than it was.

Curious about the second book: will we finally have the main characters share more than just two words (and one of those two is inexplicably “iloveyou”)?

Because this felt more like a very rushed introduction to the myth and not sure it can get decent.

Over the years I have come to expect good things from Meg Cabot. In all of her books (at least the ones I've read), a likable heroine and good writing quality is a given. Meg Cabot is rock-solid. Whenever I'm running low on good books, I'll go pick one of her books up at the library. I can ALWAYS count on them to hold my attention and make me laugh.
This book was a bit of a letdown for me. I wanted to like it so bad! I was so excited about this one. I mean, mythology, the underworld, and Meg Cabot's brilliant wit. I had such high hopes!
One of the things that bugged me the most was all the flashbacks. I swear, fifty percent of the book was in flashbacks. Maybe I'm wrong, but when you have that many flashbacks in a book, you should have written a book before it. There was certainly enough flashback material for an entire book.
The whole time I was reading this book (and it took me a pretty long time to finish it) I felt like I was reading a rough draft of a story that had the potential to be awesome. Only it isn't the rough draft. It is an edited, published copy of a book by a bestselling author. There is no good reason why this book isn't better. The story was so choppy. I cannot stress this enough. I really feel that this should have gone through several more drafts before it was published.
With that being said, it still had a few moments that weren't bad. The idea of this book, at it's core, is a pretty good one. The execution was just crappy. I may still read the next book in the series in the hopes that it will be better.

This was a really good book. When I first started reading it I didn't think it would grip me the way it did but it kept my attention throughout the story. The creep factor was high and what happened at the end I didn't see coming. This is the beginning of a series and I can't wait to read the upcoming books. Meg Cabot is an amazing writer.

Want a love story that is not riddled with gender stereotypes and plagued by bad writing? Don't read this. Instead read Arrows, by Melissa Gorzelanczyk: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20734033-arrows

It's got myth, it's got love triangles, and it's got Gods. And it's way better than this sad book.

ABANDON had a very interesting premise. Dramatic retelling of Persephone and Hades? Just hearing the first four words had me begging my mom to take me to the bookstore.

When I finally bought it, my heart fluttered. I knew I would love it. With everything I've heard about how legendary Meg Cabot was, I knew that from the moment I read the first word, I'd be in love.
I read the first word. And I waited. Got to page fifty. Waited some more. Page one hundred. Still waiting. When was this book supposed to get amazing?

Page three-hundred something. Not enchanted. Frankly, the frequent flashbacks did nothing for the story. Honestly, they just made it confusing. I didn't latch onto anything in the story. Pierce was weird. Her family was psycho.

I did like some things about the story. I read the book a while ago, so I don't remember everything. It's mostly just emotions I can feel from the book.

Still, I'm going to buy Underworld and give it a chance because 1) the cover is gorgeous, and 2) I still kind of want to read it, even though my journey with this one was nothing short of rough.

Hopefully, it'll give me a better experience.

3.5 stars. I read this when I was younger and I think it is still pretty good. It is a very easy read for me, but that is perfect for what I need now.

hades and persephone retelling. the vision. except I didn't like this.
------------------------
Another annoying main character. When this happens, it's so easy for my brain to tune out and forget everything. She wanted to save everyone, but she is so clueless to the fact that PEOPLE ARE DYING. Also John had that "bad aura" about him but turned out to be pretty annoying. Their relationship seemed very insta-lovey (I know it's a Hades-Persephone retelling), but Persephone at least put up a fight. in the book, the correlation between Persephone and Pierce just wasn't clear to the reader. The grandmother being a Fury was predictable. The plot was just overall a bore, but the premise was good. Greek Mythology is one of my favorite things, but it's becoming so overused and not done well these days.

laurolly's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 25%

Did not capture my attention, the main character felt flat, and there were too many instances of the characters knowing more than the reader and taunting it.
