I have a hard time describing what my main problem with this book is, other than that it's not... weird enough? I feel like all the stories in this work are too brief to really get to the meat of the themes and topics they try to explore. Even the weirdest and most unhinged characters never get their full moment to shine beyond the initial shock of what their inclusion adds, and I think it's a shame, because the book still has no problem getting descriptive about bodily fluids and other gross-out content. I feel like -- with the exception of one story about a very particular dining experience -- the stories are, somehow, holding themselves back.
That being said, I enjoyed the prose, and I didn't find my concentration wavering even through the most slow-paced of the stories.

I read reviews which said that a character pops up in the various short stories so I know I'm missing the overall message of the book but god did I not like the plots of the 3 short stories. The first one included a rape scene that I personally feel didn't add anything to the narrative - it didn't explore the trauma that inflicts on a person, it was just something that happened and I guess we move on to the next story! The next one being a short story about a man wanting to have sex with a foreigner who had come to visit his hometown that lives on a body of water. Then the third story was about a man being mauled by lions in a zoo as a result of a strange woman, probably the one who raped the woman in the first story, pushed him down and injured him. All in all, not the Southern Reach-adjacent story I thought I was getting.
Moderate: Rape and Sexual assault

TW for the sudden (and questionably presented) rape scene 20 pages in.
Yikes.
