4.5 stars - That was just... I have no words... Just heartbreaking and yet hopeful.

I know that they are very much still strangers at the end, making this more of a HFN than the HEA it claims, but the hope presented made me cry.

Reading this short story was like getting kicked in the chest by a mule over and over and over again. It follows Marco and Scott through twenty years of friendship and heartache and had me crying uncontrollably almost the whole time. I'm not sure that I'd classify it as "heartwarming" (although we do get a sweet HEA at the end of the story), but it was well-written and absolutely chock-full of emotion.

Part of the Heartwarming series - but I was thinking No!, not more, not again most of the way through. I think in a longer, fleshed out version I'd have been a crying mess!
A very compelling, intense read, more for the missing years than those flashes of time we see.
The story is of 20 years in the life of Scott and Marco - at 12 they already have had more shit thrown at them by life than most people - Scott largely feral despite living with his alcoholic mother, Marco is already prime carer for his Gran with dementia and two younger sisters.
The next 20 years is covered by 5 year jumps, which I didn't mind, but I did fill in the gaps with my imagination - what had Scott done to survive, where was his bag? And Marco, gradually worn down by responsibilities and, even as adults, seemingly unthankful sisters.
They do finally get their heartwarming hopeful future - and I hope it works!

Kim Fielding has written characters that, in such a short story, I fell completely in love with. These boys tried so hard to find just a few moments of happiness in their lives. It seemed the only way they were truly able to be happy was with each other.

Damn. This one made me tear up. Marco and Scott. Lots of years, lots of things to keep them apart, and lots of misery in their lives. It was hard to see all of the strife they have had to live through, but it was great to see that perhaps things can work out the way they are supposed to. Very sweet to see Scott be able to pull his life together and to see Marco finally do something for himself.

Thank God this was short because I literally cried my entire way through this short story.

Beautifully broken.
