Beautiful, simple illustrations, as always, by Molly Idle. I love the teal/pink palette and the flow of Pearl's hair underwater. The story felt more awkward.

I have been eying this book (primarily for the exceptional cover) while at work, and during a slow and blizzard filled afternoon I finally picked it up and read it. Oh. My. Gosh, how gorgeous and sensational!

Molly Idle's story and illustrations will not only leave a lasting impression deep in the heart of the reader, but for thousands of future readers (and fans) too! Luckily the library has several of her other books, and I cannot wait to read each and every one of them (mermaid related or not)!

Whether you are an adult or a child, a fan of words or of pictures, this is a book for you. I would also recommend it being considered for a story time session either in a library, school, or at home!

"The smallest of things can make a great difference, Pearl" said her mother.

A myth about the creation of the moon and Pearl, the mermaid's role in that.

Review:

I love Molly Idle’s artwork in any children’s picture book I’ve seen! As for the story, I really enjoyed the lesson Pearl learns in taking care of something that she thought was less than what she hoped to care for. I loved that you could see in the pictures that her mom was there watching over Pearl as she cared for the single grain of sand. I also loved that Pearl decided on her own to watch over another grain when the first grew into something great!

Summary:

Pearl watches the other mermaids of the sea care for so many things in it & wants to care for something too. But when her mother gives her only one grain of sand to care for, Pearl is disappointed to not be trusted with more. Until Pearl discovers that there’s something special about her seemingly simple task…

A mermaid is entrusted with a miniscule item that grows to great importance.
