It took me a bit to get into the book, but then I devoured it. I thought it was a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Despite that, I found Poppy annoying and the plot was predictable. I think I accurately predicted every major plot point at least 200 pages before it happened.
Cas and Poppy's relationship also annoyed me. Poppy is super violent towards Cas and he FREAKING KIDNAPPED HER. Not sure how I feel about that whole relationship. It feels very ick

The writing left much to be desired but it was a fun enough read.

A must-read for fans of ACOTR. Poppy is the revered Maiden who lives a sheltered life controlled by the Ascended. As her own ascension nears, her own desires and needs wrestle with the expectations on her. When the handsome Hawke becomes her Royal Guard, Poppy struggles to keep her emotions in check. What follows is some earth-shattering truths that Poppy will need to make sense of if she is to survive.
After book one, this feels like a great series, as TikTok readers have claimed. The first half is a little slow as the world & character building is the focus, the last half of the book has a good pace and of course the passionate smut makes an appearance. I enjoyed this read and will continue with the series.

I found this book very slow to begin with because I didn’t feel a lot really happened due to the amount of world building, however the last part of the book had me hooked. Unfortunately I figured out the ‘plot twist’ not even half way into the book which kinda ruined the experience for me because I was just waiting for it to happen rather then enjoying the book. The main characters are lovable and relatable, especially Poppy. Was refreshing to have a heroine that didn’t get on my nerves. Lastly I loved the fresh take on the vampire genre and I look forward to reading more of the more in the rest of the series.
