The Maiden is selected by the Gods and from birth her life is not her own. Due to Ascend before the Gods, Poppy is resistant. She doesn’t understand what the ascension entails, nor does she want. And yet, Poppy is a not just the Maiden. She is a person; with her own desires and dreams.
And when guard Hawke comes into her life she finds him impossible to resist. It’s forbidden to touch the Maiden. Yet the Maiden herself burns for his touch.
When tragedy strikes the castle in the form of the Atlantians and the Craven (a vampiric race who are enemies of the Ascended, and a lesser race who no longer control their own minds and have sucumbed to blood lust), Poppy is summoned by the Queen to the capital. Hawke accompanies her, and on the way Poppy discovers he is not what he seems.
Can she still love him when she discovers his true identity? Or is their relationship doomed from the start?
I ordered book 2 soon after starting this book as it was so good!

This book started out pretty shaky BUT I was won over by the amazing work of the narrator. She had a way of narrating things so that the banter and characters flowed in a way that the prose didn’t. I will also credit the book with the fact that Poppy felt like an 18-year-old girl scrabbling for control in her own life. The themes and exploration of them was interesting. Poppy’s character lent to these themes and it was fairly well done. Aside from that, the foreshadowing as fairly well done.
What really tanked this book for me was the last quarter of the book roughly. While it was declining slightly before the twist was revealed, that’s what destroyed the book for me. Everything about the characters and who they were felt like it vanished. Their actions stopped making sense and while I thought some changes after the reveal of the twist were well some, most didn’t. I stopped understanding Poppy and her actions. I found myself so frustrated with her and what she was doing that it tanked the book for me.
