Sports, High School, and rape culture. It wasn't fun to read but it was good.

Trigger warning: this book revolves heavily around SA, cultural responses to it, and emotional fallout. It is handled incredibly well, but it is blatant. If that’s not something you want to read: this is probably not your book. Be aware going in; I don’t think enough people have posted the trigger warnings for this book, so I want to make sure that’s clear.

Past that: MY GOSH.

this town was a real place. I think I’ve been there. I think I know these people. I grew up here, maybe.

This was rough. This hurt a lot. Backman turns your face to look at ugliness and does not let you look away. But there is so much human love here. These people are emotional and real. You understand all of them, but you loathe the ones you should even without Backman telling you that. This is literature. I will be reading everything this man has ever written.

The book has an ebb and flow. Sometimes it spends too long on things and sometimes the plot shoots by you. At some point you come to understand that whatever you expect to happen will likely not be quite what happens

i could not put this one down. it’s slow to start, but fredrick backman’s writing is so easy to sink into that it doesn’t even matter. i was taken through the entire spectrum of human emotions reading this, and i may have to make an emergency trip to the bookstore tomorrow for the next one. (please look up TWs before reading!)
