my second favorite book of the series.
i loved basically everything about Heir of Fire, Celaena’s journey and development, Chaol’s inner struggle about where his loyalties actually lie, amazing new introduced characters and especially more magic content!!

i very much disliked everything surrounding Dorian and Sorsha, their POV chapters were so boring and absolutely pointless, she especially was such a dull and uninteresting character,
the only time i was interested in a scene with her in it was when she died.

This took me a bit longer to get through. I felt like I was missing out on Easter eggs and Celaena's past due to me not reading the prequel to the Throne of Glass series, The Assassin's Blade. So I stopped around 50% and listened to that audio.

Heir of fire is a rocky transition through the series, with so many new characters being thrown at you. Along with grasping people in Aelin's life merging with those in Celaena's life. 🥵

it's REALLY overwhelming😭😓 Especially Rowan's transformation...I still have no idea when that went down and literally questioned if he was a new character😅😭🤦🏽‍♀️

Then on top of that,  there are sprinkles from Manon's perspective. Celaena killing one of the iron teeth witches elder's stirred their cauldron. I think she alone should have been a novella within the series..unless there is one...I'm tired just thinking about it.

I do love her creature/dragon companion Axbraxtos and them learning to trust each other.

It literally felt like I was thrown from the ToG world and projected to the iron teeth witches world.

All I can recall at the end is Celaena/Aelin reconnecting with her true self and declaring war as terresan's lost queen....it's A LOT.

I'll probably take a break from this series to gather my bearings.

Loved the start and end of this book! The middle was a bit slow, mostly being a very long training and sleuthing montage, but the characters were enjoyable enough to carry me through (particularly Manon, this book was a great introduction to her character). Overall, it’s left me excited to see how the story continues!

1st read: 5 stars
2nd read: 2.5-3 stars

"you and I are going to learn how to fly. And then we'll stain this kingdom red."

I am going to outright say this.
Manon Blackbeak's plot and Dorian Havilliard's character are the only reason I am willing to put myself through reading the next book.

I can't believe how shitty this book is when you're reading it a second time, knowing that this new couple is going to be the big relationship goals.

Get comfortable I'm going to rant in this review.

Before we get to the long list of flaws, let's get rid of the good stuff first.

! SPOILERS AHEAD !

Manon and Abraxos are my favorite relationship in the entire series, that won't change I can tell. Manon's chapters were the best, thank the witches that this book got three stars because they're the two of them.
Manon; everything from her monstrosity to her gentler heart, makes me love her. The fact that she chose the courageous bait beast as her wyvern was the best plot point Maas wrote in this book. The Blackbeak witch went as far as to visit ancient spiders for their strong woven silk to help the wings of Abraxos, on a storm. And the wyvern used his wings to warm her *heart eyes*
The witches are so original in this book. They're like vampires on flying brooms, so far I haven't seen any relation to witchcraft but I suppose that could be from the curse of the Crochans. I want to know why the Crochans cursed them though, what the curse entails -does it say anywhere in this stupid book?- and how the curse breaks. According to the dying Crochan at the end, the witches know how to break it and still hunt them down instead of doing so.
I would love for Manon to be the Witch Queen or something, I want to see her conquer her race's home once again and honestly, I think it'd be great if she did slaughter the king's enemies. Why would she care for humans?

But unfortunately Manon and her witches aren't the only plot in this book, (if it were I would keep the five stars) in fact I think her chapters were the fewest.

Just so it can get out of the way, I love Dorian, I really do, but his character was reduced to this shitty romance in this book that I honestly skipped reading the second time. It was horrible enough the first time. Somehow Maas thinks it's a good idea to provide Dorian with a romantic interest that gets beheaded by the end of the book. What the fuck? Does she hate his character so much, she wants to inflict all pain that she can on him? Don't get me wrong, I hated Sorcha-what kind of fucked up name is that anyway- and their stupid little affair so I was glad when she died because now it can never continue but it was just unnecessary. I'm sure there were better ways of using the Crown Prince in this book.
Poor baby is probably becoming a Valg Prince because of the motherfucker, the Aderlan King, his own fucking father and I hope this gets fixed in the next book!!

So I was never a fan of Chaol. I am still not a fan of Chaol. I was so bored reading the chapters with him, Aedion and those men. Who were they? Aedion's soldiers? Rebels? Both? I'm not sure, I couldn't possibly bother to actually care.
Aedion is a gem though. He's Celeana's cousin and shares her turquoise eyes. He's definitely there right after Dorian in my 'only parts of these books that are good' list. I adore his sense of loyalty to Celeana and how he was willing to die to save a person he knew she loved, while all he wanted was to see her once.
I WANT THE AELIN AEDION REUNION.
By the way, I kind of got the impression that Aedion slept with many girls and guys? I don't know? Why is he called 'Adarlan's Whore'? Sarah are you going to explain this? I can understand if it's a homophobic view of the age, that Malakai and Emrys were fine being together because they were half Fae but I'm still confused as to why Aedion has that title.

Ah, yes. Malakai and Emrys. MATES.

If you don't know there is a special snowflake called A Court of some shit, in which mates can't be of the same gender because mating has one purpose; to breed. Sarah probably doesn't know what the hell she writes. Now unless one of the two demi-Fae are trans I don't see how this works with her Fae rules.
Guess what is another mate rule she forgot she wrote about?
Mates can't hurt each other. Physically. A rule that apparently does NOT apply in this situation.
Why Celeana & Rowan is not a good pairing and other flaws

I would like to remind you that they are distant relatives. :)

When they meet Celeana pretty much admits that he can kill her and not give a shit about it. Which I don't know about you but that is the greatest set up am I right.

Then we proceed to something amazing called emotional abuse and physical abuse.

Rowan continuously tears her apart with words, words so cruel that I cannot understand how she likes him. Oh I have examples.

pg. 103 this is after he's called her a coward.
Powerful, rough hands under her shoulders, the world tilting and spinning, then that tattooed snarling face in hers. Let him take her head between those massive hands and break her neck. "Pathetic." He spat, releasing her.
pg. 163
"You're worthless."
"Tell me something I don't know."
He went on. "You would probably have been more useful to the world if you'd actually died ten years ago."

Throughout the entire book, they punch each other and kick each other's asses.

There is a scene where they fight some skinwalker monsters and he saves her. We're supposed to think that it's this Great act™ but seriously? He is Maeve's knight or something, Maeve whips him when he isn't efficient, he's been given the duty to train her niece DO YOU THINK THERE IS ANY CHANCE HE WOULD LET HER DIE?
So Celeana is like well, shit he saved me he cares for me I guess I can't hate him now but I STRONGLY dislike him (pg. 200)

It has been referred more than once in this book, that Rowan is so much older than Celeana. It says that no matter how old Celeana got she would still be a child to him.

Verbal and physical abuse 2.0
pg. 276
"Instead of reminding me again and again how rutting worthless and awful and cowardly I am. Believe me, I can do the job well enough on my own. So just hit me because I'm damned tired of trading insults."

SO JUST HIT ME :)

"I don't care what you have been through or what you want to do with your life. The sooner you can sort out your whining and self pity the sooner I can be rid of you. You are nothing to me and I do not care."

I LOVE ME SOME WELL WRITTEN ROMANCE Y'ALL

The next day Celeana sort of has a breakdown in the kitchen and one of those demi-Fae goes and talks to Rowan about how Celeana is losing herself.
Rumors say she is going through some mental illness. She is full of self-hate and doesn't value her life. So do you know what Rowan does after he hears about that?
MORE EMOTIONAL ABUSE
He decides it's a good idea to use one of her friends as part of her training. He basically chains him somewhere over a frozen lake and Celeana has to save him without sending him to the bottom and killing him. She is unstable with her magic and he knows this but he thinks it's the best method, especially after he's been told she's in a mentally unhealthy condition.
pg. 284
"It gives me comfort to know that people like you have a special place in hell waiting for them."

They have a fight after she saves the boy in which she burns his tattoo and breaks down over Nehemia.
pg. 301
"I deserved it."
"Doesn't mean I can't feel bad."

um YES IT DOES.
YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE A CRUEL ASSASSIN WHY DO YOU FEEL BAD ABOUT HURTING SOMEONE WHO HURTS YOU NON-STOP.

Oh and then she says something about wanting to claw the eyes out of the girls who are staring at Rowan.

:)

And you know what, I would shut up about the entire thing IF ROWAN SAID HE WAS SORRY. He never did. He did feel bad about what he put her through after he learned her past but he never asked for forgiveness.
And like magic the mental illness is gone.

I'm done.

There is absolutely no fucking sense to this romance and I hate that he took the blood oath to her in the end because it means Aedion probably can't take it himself like he wanted for years. (and deserves to)

What a great message this relationship sends right??? A guy can make you think you're shit and never apologize and it's all okay if he says he cares about you in the end.

Fuck off

*Dramatically throws book*
