Enjoyed what I did read but it started to feel like a chore. I’ll definitely pick it up again though.

I started The Magic Mountain after seeing it on William Gass' list of books that most influenced him. It's long -- so long that I figured I would abandon it sooner or later. But about 30% in I must have settled into the same concept of time that Hans Castorp embraced high up on that mountain, and many weeks later here we are.
Some stretches were utterly unfollowable, especially the verbal dueling between Settembrini and Naphta. Some stretches were very moving. Some were surreal. Some were mystical. It all added up to a memorable experience that will take me quite some time to process.
William Gass: "The Magic Mountain is a work I have read more often than any other novel, and one I studied carefully when young, and began to see as a complex textual world."
