Long. Clever. Tedious. Horrifying. Allegorical.

I hadn't ever expected to find the concept of "second breakfast" outside of Tolkien, but there we are--apparently it existed in early 20th century sanatoriums.

I found it somewhat difficult to interpret the allegorical parts of the novel without help, as they refer to century-old European history. The ostensible story was interesting, being about the insidious process of institutionalization.

The constant blathering on about the nature of time, or rather human experience thereof... tiresome. That may have been part of the point.

Worth reading, I think, but I needed several extended breaks to keep going.

DID NOT FINISH: 18%

I read the first 130 pages, and we are only three days into a 21 day trip. Nothing has happened yet. I’m bored.
