If there ever was a “yay, I made it “ book, well “Magic Mountain” is it! Double yay!  Not an easy read for me vacillating between enjoyment and tedium.  Spent six months picking my way through as my own rest cure.

Tuberculosis aside, I would have relished being Hans Castorp at Berghof sanatorium, he spent all of his time learning about everything and self exploration.  Time at the sanatorium blended into magical blur where every day was the same, allowing one to relax and be at ease. Yes, death was always present, but isn’t it everywhere anyways?

Enjoyment aspect was learning along with Hans and seeing his mindset grow. The polite gossipy chatter amongst the patients comparing good Russians to Bad Russians.  Walks with Joachim  Endless tea party.

Tedium reading boundless didactic exchanges between
Settembrini and Naphta. I never wanted a character to shut up more than Naphta. While I understand they are binaries of each and other and Naphta is meant to challenge Hans, heavy handed edit would not have lost much.

Favorite sections Snow and Good Soldier.

I am not about to read such a long book when I am not feeling particularly interested in it.

Too much of "just vibes no plot" for a 1000+ page book for me personally

I know I am talking nonsense, but I’d rather go rambling on, and partly expressing something I find it difficult to express, than to keep on transmitting faultless platitudes.

Originally a samizdat read, then a tandem with the Mrs. Much of the second was accomplished in Memphis. We didn't read the Woods translation but I own it and look forward to such, maybe in Albania.

I seldom go a week without think about Naphta and his determined conclusion. I think of Nathan Zuckerman and his reading of Magic Mountain, I think about the passage of time, Nietzsche's sense of health and the value of six meals a day alongside cigars.

When you get to the Magic Mountain, you only intend to stay for a few weeks, but a few weeks can turn into seven years. Meanwhile, there is a war going on down below.
Eating multiple breakfasts, wrapping yourself in blankets for rests outdoors to heal from the mountain air.
This is a great book.

Parts of this are brilliant. Much of it is very funny. I didn’t like the didactic chapters
