This is not your typical romantasy- reading the negative reviews surprised me, It probably would be easier to say this book borders on darker romance as the MMC is cruel, toxic, morally grey and the FMC is uncomfortable with his attention for some of the book.
Personally I loved it and that ending was ruthless!

I want everyone who recommended this book to be arrested.
I want everyone who looks at Dacre and sees a book husband to put down their ereaders, step outside, and touch some grass.
I’m all for the occasional dark romance, and I’ll be honest and say the spice in this book was seriously spicing (hence the shameful half a star added to the rating). But don’t lie to me or anyone else and say Dacre is serious book boyfriend material unless you’ve got a serious degradation kink, which I’m beginning to think the FMC does. He’s possessive, entitled, downright mean, and the FMC lets him just walk over her.
Not to mention the writing. I’m sorry this might be the worst book I’ve read this year so far. What plot? What world building? What romance????? This was lust, lust, and more lust. And if it hadn’t taken itself so damn seriously, I wouldn’t be either! But if this wants to be a real book series and not just mindless smut, then give me some actual substance of any kind please.

I breezed through this and really enjoyed it purely on the vibes.
This not have particularly good world building- I still cannot tell you a single thing about how the magic works in this world. But I didn’t need to to have a good time. Definitely the main focus was the romance rather than the fantasy or politics. Plus good spice and a cliffhanger… I’m eagerly awaiting book 2 in august!

This was a fun read!!!! Very fast paced and easy to follow. Saw that ending coming from a mile away but I did nottttt think that was how it would go down!!!
4.5 ⭐️ while a tad predictable, it’s still pretty much everything you look for in an enemies to lovers trope. FMC on the run from a brutal past, will she meet a prince or her enemy? It’s a great set up for the next book too because I’m curious WTF she’s gonna do when all her secrets are revealed. Also can’t wait to see what power she has cause we all know she’s gonna eventually have something lol. Wild how many mixed reviews there were for this book.. oh well I enjoyed it :)

This book was... incredibly difficult to get through. Overall, it felt painfully shallow—like I was reading a story where nothing of real substance actually happened. The plot seemed almost nonexistent, as if it only served as a weak backdrop for the so-called romance, which was anything but compelling.
The "spice" was not only excessive but also awkward and unconvincing, making the entire dynamic feel forced rather than organic. The relationship itself was downright toxic, built on questionable foundations and lacking any genuine emotional depth. On top of that, many elements in the story made little to no sense, leaving me more frustrated than entertained.
Ultimately, this book missed the mark for me in every way. If you're looking for well-developed characters, a meaningful plot, or even just a "romance" that feels remotely believable, this might not be the right pick.
