Obwohl mich die Grundidee von "The Veiled Kingdom" (Prinzessin des Landes muss ihre Identität verbergen & landet bei den Rebellen) angesprochen hat, konnte die Umsetzung mich nicht überzeugen. Es handelt sich um ein Romantasy-Buch, bei dem die Fantasy-Aspekte jedoch nicht im Fokus liegen. Worldbuilding gibt es kaum - über die Magie, den Aufbau des Reichs sowie die genauen Ziele der Rebellen erfahren wir nicht genug. Auf der Handlungsebene passiert insgesamt wenig, zudem ist der Verlauf deshalb vorhersehbar, weil wir als Leser von Anfang an über den "Plot-Twist" informiert wurden. Der Fokus liegt also verstärkt auf der Romance oder vielmehr der Tension. Diese entwickelte sich jedoch so schnell, dass ich sie nicht mitfühlen konnte. Beide Perspektiven werden nicht so emotional-tiefgründig aufgearbeitet, dass ich verstehen konnte, was unsere Protagonisten ausmacht. Außerdem ereigneten sich Perspektivwechsel oft in genau den Szenen, wo die Gedanken/ Wahrnehmung des anderen Charakters relevant fürs Verständnis gewesen wäre. It’s more toxic MMC than enemies to lovers imo. All happened way too fast. The book would have been better with a hundred pages more for that and explaining the magic system and history of the kingdom. It is more spice than story.
All in all: It was fine, but no must read. Will still read the next book. Because the cliff hanger at the end is soooo mean. Really disliked the ending.

Worst ending ever! The enemies-to-lovers thing could have been done so much better; there were so many missed opportunities.

DNF. The beginning was promising: a rebellion, a princess fleeing from her king, and getting captured by the rebellion. But as soon as she encounters the rebellion, it’s like she becomes a completely different character. Everything moves so fast, and the guy who just violently captured her is suddenly super attractive on the next few pages, and she blushes when she looks at him. I don’t get it. And how many more times does he want to clench his jaw? I honestly thought he was about to crush his teeth if the author mentioned it one more time! Very repetitive descriptions that really drove me nuts. And the protagonist adapts to her new situation and becomes best friends with everyone within an hour, so much so that it felt like the author forgot there’s a difference between narrative time and story time.
