This book was definitely not one I was expecting to enjoy so much! It was like a mix between Before I Wake and Stranger Things??

I was definitely with Jess the whole time wanting to protect this little kid despite everything he was unintentionally doing. In the end, it was probably good he died, but damn, it's sad that his own father had to do it.

The gory descriptions in this were nearly impossible for my tiny imagination to figure out. I have zero idea what the father monster even looked like. I just kept imagining him like Lupin in Harry Potter but with a couple extra hands and faces attached. My imagination isn't good enough for a book like this 😂

This was a fun and interesting take on an allegory of fear in a horror thriller/monster feature. Lots of discussion about fear itself, what makes a monster, and parental love.

There's many action scenes that belong on a big screen; the scale of the gore and gunfights. I loved the constrained, hold-your-breath scenes more, personally. Cassidy does a great job balancing both. For a horror book, I love having the questions he brings up throughout the journey.

I will have to pick up his previous works.
