Ooh I loved this one. Probably partly because this is set just right near where we live, but it's also so well written and very fun and super funny. I love the idea of just completely accidentally becoming a hitwoman. I'm very excited to read more of this series and more of this author in general.

I was hoping that this book would deliver on the laughs because so many people seem to have such a fun time with it, but I don't remember laughing even once. That's not to say this wasn't fun, but if I were to compare it to Dial A For Aunties, which has a similar plot of "main character lands in a predicament related to murder and goes through weird and hilarious plot points to get herself out of it", I thought that one was funnier by a mile.

Finlay is a murder mystery author, and she leans into that expertise a lot for all the decisions that she makes throughout this book. As a murder mystery reader, I couldn't help but wonder why she made some of the choices she did, when it would've been much easier and smarter to take a different route.

I did like Finlay and Vero and their dynamic a lot, and that will probably be why I continue with this series. There's also a love V/triangle in this that I am sure will get more page time in the next book.

#Bookreview Book Review: Finlay Donavan is Killing it by @ellecosimano

OMG! Finlay Donavan is one of my favorite reads for January 2022. It is witty, funny with lots of laugh-out-loud moments and a hint of dark humor.

Finlay is a suspense novelist, but currently, she’s doing very poorly: she’s broke, up to her ears in debt, a single mom about to lose custody of her children, and has an absolute lowlife for an ex.

She already has a thick resume of β€œBad decisions”: she has gotten arrested for putting Play-Dough in the exhaust pipe of her ex-husband’s lover/fiancΓ©es car; she’s been thrown out of and banned from Panera, for throwing soup on said lover. It goes further downhill when she meets up with her agent (at Panera, of course!) to discuss her latest book ideas, only to be mistaken for a contract killer! πŸ˜‚

The customer has a job for her and won’t take no for answer! Following her slew of bad decisions, Finlay digs herself into a deeper hole as she tries to get herself out of this job. But the job is quite tempting and the answer to all her monetary problems atm. With the help of her fierce nanny/accomplice, Vero, one bad decision leads to another, and Finlay is too deep to back away now. She finds herself part of real-life crimes with Russian mobs and real contract killers. πŸ˜…

I loved the unconventional way she solves the mystery (and I didn’t guess whodunnit). Also, the detective (Nick) was πŸ’―

It was outrageous, funny, fast-paced, with a unique plot that had me reading late!

Do I want more Finlay? Absolutely yess!!!!

The sequel comes out in Feb, and I'm so stoked!

Lots of fun to be had here - as promised, by many bookish pals!

You can’t help but root for Finlay as she tries to handle all the shit life has thrown her way. She’s a little bit out of control, a little bit hapless, but she’s managing, and underneath it all, she doesn’t miss much.

This one moves along at a brisk pace, and there are some humorous moments along the way. I’m here for more romantic tension in the second book, since I thought the author accomplished that element particularly well.

I think I was expecting even more, however - more funny, more mysterious / pageturny, more depth to the characters? I was expecting a lot, and it didn’t reach that level of total satisfaction for me. Still, it was a well-put together, easy, entertaining read and I’m totally in for the rest of the series.
