I read this book when I was in school and decided to come back to it when I was looking for a quick read. I really forgot how much I love this series.

1. I was SHOCKED to see that the writing in this book held up over the years. I recently read a couple of the Twilight books and, wow, I can't believe people ever compared the two in terms of writing.

2. The characters are likably flawed. They all have their flaws and characteristics that are unlikable. I think this adds to the realism of the story.

3. An easy read for most. Another thing I love about this book (and the series as a whole) is how short the books are. The story is just long enough to get invested in the characters/plot without having to slog through paragraphs of non-consequential inner dialogue.

Overall, if you're looking for a quick read - this is a great choice!

Oh my god! This story was compelling, I couldn't stop reading it. There was something intense and appealing about a game and fake dating. These two combined were a treat. I liked that Katniss was badass and Peeta was the softie between the two. The game itself was cruel as fuck, horrible! And Rue, oh god, her death broke me. I watched the movies years ago but reading it felt different, the emotions I had for the story heightened. The themes were serious but executed great. Wow, Suzanne, now I need the rest of the series. Thanks to you, the audiobook narrator, the story flew across the pages.❤️

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'VE EVER READ...
The Hunger Games franchise will always have a special place in my heart. I was introduced to it by my mother and my aunt. I remember sitting in the living room watching the movies with them years ago. Though I have made previous attempts to do so, this is my first fully independent read of the book. The film does it justice, but there's just something about this world that takes to pen and paper more than the screen. It's lush and well-built. It feels alive. Katniss' character is masterfully crafted. Down to Collins' word choice, we are fully pulled—no, dragged—into the world of Panem head-first; its desolation, hopelessness, glamors and all. I could write an essay on all of it. I felt genuinely horrified in Part Three, especially during the last few chapters that took place in the arena. I was fully immersed. I lost sleep, unable to put down the book. A true five stars, no notes.

Is it too early to call this book a modern classic yet? Most of the books I read during the YA dystopian boom of the early-to-mid-2010s have not aged well at all, but I enjoyed this book so much that I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without reading it. Suzanne Collins provides a masterclass in dystopian worldbuilding as she creates a society that is so clearly awful yet so close to the world we live in. There is so much potential and I feel Collins has only touched the surface so I look forward to exploring more of Panem in the other books.

I tend to find the protagonists of these kinds of books annoying and Mary-Sue esque but I was really surprised by how much I liked Katniss. Her limitations, the way she narrates her thoughts, and the way she interacts with other people seem so realistic and three-dimensional. It may have helped that I was listening to the audiobook narrated by Tatiana Maslany, whose voice acting throughout is absolutely fantastic and brought every character, and especially Katniss, to life.

Plus, I’m a sucker for the fake relationship trope and it’s so well-written here.

I can see why these books are so popular and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.

This is my first time picking up The Hunger Games after growing up watching and re-watching the movies for years and all I can say is “why didn’t I pick this up sooner?!” The book is a lot more intense and detailed than the movie, which is some thing I appreciate and am grateful to be able to read and truly dissect for the first time now that I’m older. I was in between reading my paperback and listening to the audiobook or doing both at the same time to enhance my reading experience. I can’t wait to reread this once I’m done with the trilogy so I can annotate the hell out of my copy because I was itching to if it weren’t for me having an old copy of the book😅 After it being such an amazing read, there’s no doubt in my mind that the next two books will only get better and this is a new book I won’t stop recommending!
