first reread since middle school, and man it’s still so good. I love both Katniss and Peeta so much !!! but i am also terrified of what happens in the next two
also, yes i did cry when rue died even though i knew it was coming. it’s just so heartbreaking.

i love suzanne collins she is a queen

this was a good read, and i liked katniss. her description of her district makes it feel like home, and i felt her terror in the arena, running from all sorts of danger, searching for water and food, trying her best to win her sponsor's favor.
i loved her relationship with prim and cinna and rue and even with haymitch and foxface. what i'm trying to say is: it was obvious how much love, gratitude, admiration or hate she felt for these characters. this is true for most of the cast; we know what katniss feels for them, even if they're conflicting feelings or she's not quite sure what to think of them.
the only characters where i didn't really get her feelings though, were the characters she should've felt the most for: gale and peeta.
yes, she's friends with gale, but it felt like she forgets him for most of the book (which, yes, i understood, she didn't have much time to think about him in the arena, but still. other characters get referenced, only he seems to be forgotten.)
the same for peeta! she likes him, yes, and then he's basically her ticket to survival, but it didn't feel quite right until after the games and then, at the ending, we're supposed to buy that she might be in love with both, when the only hint that she has romantic feelings for gale was, that she insists she doesn't?
i didn't like that, and i feel like the love story could've done well with a few more mentions of gale while katniss was in the arena.

also by the way i only read this book, and plan on reading its follow up books, so i can read again my old books and refresh how i feel about them before i decide what to do with them (like keeping them or donating them etc), so my review might seem a little bit more critical because my taste in books has substantially evolved based on what i have been thru and the more epiphanies i have of myself. so please keep that in mind and im sorry, i do not mean to hurt any fans' feeling over this review; in fact i used to be a major fangirl of the series and especially katniss when i was just a few years younger. but now im 18, and i just want to voice my opinions of this book since this book and its series is hyped by so many people, so hopefully my tiny little review wont make much impact on its glowing reputation<3

now starting with the negatives .... its just, some parts of katniss' character and the whole hetero ya genre/writing style just felt a little cringey for my taste. it was to the point where i basically struggled to finish the book. i had to even make every single character queer and change the whole plot to spice it up and make myself continue since i couldnt stand this type of predictable cheesy ya hetero romance. overall, the whole hetero romance just felt too much for my personal preferences and i kind of wish katniss focused on a way to fight the capitol while trying to play their games instead of having frantic thoughts here and there; going from the games, then her feelings, then doubts etc. if she focused more on hatching a plan for rebellion after the games as a revenge, it would probably given it enough content to not need a romance element to it and have katniss and peeta work another angle in surviving the games(like childhood besties or smthng)

buutt there some special moments that made me feel so sad and happy and philosophical with the system, both in the book and in real life, that gave me a new appreciation towards this book (like the bond between katniss and rue). and this is where i have conflicting emotions, where if it werent for those wholesome moments, and me changing everything in my head, id prolly give this a 1 star, but those heartwarming scenes and corruption of the capitol kind of teeters my judgement as a whole to 3-4 stars.

the element of the dystopian setting and the famous games may appeal to your preferences, but, to me, it seems that it keeps being over shined with the romance elements here and there. tho, if your into this type of romance where one doubts the others intentions and this whole back and forth of they love me, they love me not, with a hint of enemies to lovers and fake dating, then i totes recommend this book to you and support your taste in books!! just bc this book made me uncomfortable doesnt mean you wouldnt like it, so you should give it a read if this book and its synopsis is your cup of tea! :D

Ok so that was a ride. The first time I read this book I was 13 and I focused on the loved story because it seemed tragic. Now, being 20, I saw so many other themes that just flew over my head. The massive divide between the rich and the poor, how the capitol wants to pitch the people of the districts against each other, self identity, marketing and PR, family, etc. It is a book that is still very relevant today and if I could I would implement it for highschoolers to read it because it can lead to many discussions about politics, fairness, and the role of money within society. Overall if you are doubting to read this book because read it when you were young and you are worried it didn’t age gracefully, don’t and just pick it up!
