A fascinating premise with lovable, intelligent characters. I appreciated the way the book was organized, I found the pacing enjoyable and I liked the twists. Weir brings characters to life in a beautiful way and makes me not hate reading about science.

I had a great time with this book! It's very different from the sci-fi I usually read - the tone is a lot more lighthearted, and there's a general handwavey avoidance of anything too complex or cynical - but that was actually a really enjoyable change of pace. I thought the concept was fascinating, and the exploration of the themes was well-developed. The story felt tight and clever, and the ending was perfection itself. Also, I would die for Rocky!

This book is definitely not without its issues but the storytelling is solid and it managed to be compelling the whole way through. Also it made me weirdly emotional at times, like why did I care so much about the little alien crab spider? And yeah okay, the ending got me.
