The romance I felt had no chemistry but the world building made up for that :).

I feel that this is the weakest so far in this series (I have read only the first 3). I also feel that some of the religious bigotry wasn’t really given the attention it needed to be given how much of the story it took up, and the way this specific church has previously been portrayed in the series.
Still a very enjoyable and fast-paced read. I would recommend this if you enjoyed the first two and/or if you like little mermaid retellings.

Unique little mermaid retelling

I haven't encountered that much little mermaid retellings yet, so I was really excited to see that Tessonja Odette was including one in het Entangled with Fae series. I listened to this one as an audiobook and have read all her other Faerwyvae books. Even though it turned out to be my least favourite one of the Entangled with Fae books, partly because I could empathise more with Gemma's and Ember's story, (my rating is 1 Heart of the Raven Prince, 2 Curse of the Wolf King, 3 A Taste of Poison, 4 Kiss of the Selkie), it's still one you'll want to read (whether you've read the other books or not because these can all be read as stand-alones).
If you've already read Heart of the Raven Prince, you'll recognise the main character princess Maisie and her best friend Podaxis (two other characters from the series will make an appearance as well. But don't worry, you won't miss any crucial information by not having read the other books first). Just like in her other books, I like that not a single main character is flawless in this story (like Maisie's obsession with shiny and pretty things). That's one of the things that makes them even more likeable. I also really liked the dynamics between Maisie and Dorian, the whole attraction-repulsion situation, their conversations,... All the characters also go through an evolution of sorts, you see them grow little by little throughout the book. Having read the other books as well I also liked how you get to know the workings of the church of Saint Lazaro a bit better, how you come to understand why they are the way they are and how they try to change too (this and the appearances of certain characters also shows how all the Faerwyvae books are interconnected in some way, and how the entire worldbuilding is beautifully done). Another aspect that was really fun to read about was the bridal contest itself, it's something I haven't encountered that much in other books before. Additionally, the creativity and ingenuity of the fae in formulating curses and bargains again reaches a peak here, which I always find great to read about.
An aspect I liked less was how impossible it was for me to understand Dorian's character (he seems to have serious mood swings, I never knew what his next move was going to be, but maybe that makes his character more realistic). The story could also have used a little more depth, maybe for starters about the pageant, I would have loved it if it had been given a little more substance and elaboration.
The narrator was okay, not my favourite one, can't really explain why, but she nevertheless succeeded in conveying the story. You could also easily recognise when another character was talking.

So overall I give this book 4/5 ⭐ if you like fairytale retellings with a twist, that really encourage you to keep on reading, and with a guaranteed happy ending, I'd definitely recommend you check this book and the rest of the series out. Also, take a look at the hardcover while you're at it, both the dust jacket and the naked hardcover are just too stunning
