I’m sorry to say this book didn’t work for me. I appreciate what the author was going for but I didn’t find it the enjoyable heist/thriller I was looking for. It was very repetitive, the heists unlikely, and I felt like it didn’t go as deep as I was hoping. It may just be the mood I was in while reading but this is a pass for me.

DNF at 36%. The synopsis was so good but the actual writing left me yawning. The inner monologues didn’t make me care about the characters and the plot simply wasn’t believable. I was bored, which is unfortunate because I really wanted to love this book. Again, I did listen on audiobook and hated the voices, so that may be part of the problem.

a resonant message, a brilliant cast. imagery and neat scenes galore, minding a slight lack in technical detail. but ah whats a law abiding author to do? the proverbs really stuck with me, forcing an uprooted plant to grow, something about leaves down a river. each of the five fascinating in their own right, i had a personal investment in deeper characterization for Irene. Con artist is an archetype im beginning to love and i see it beautifully, but i crave more. perhaps this particular novel/storyline doesnt have the space but a spin off indulged would be perfect

Interesting premise, but cliched, boring, writing and unbelievable execution.

I really wanted to like this but it didn’t click! Too many characters with the same motivations and the relationships did not feel realistic to me. Bonus points for direct Ocean’s references, however….

Man, i really wanted to like this book because the premise is still outstanding and cool and i would have loved to read a better book with this exact premise. But the author didn’t really manage to pull off two things that would have been crucial: The heists are glossed over, all we get is heist vibes but none of the technicalities and it’s obviously because the author didn’t research and plot it out, so we get the same sentence about checking museum security, vaguely, whatever that means, every time. There is no cat and mouse game between the kids and the FBI. The second thing is the diaspora aspect: The main groups stories are diverse on the surface level, but deep down they say and think the exact same thing about everything, and it’s not believable that both a confident character and an insecure character have the exact same inner monologue. The descriptive writing was at times nice and it was cool to see a Chinese-american lived reality, emotionally, but towards the end i flinched at the phrase „full of possibility“ and several others because they were in there so often, you could play a drinking game with that. All in all it’s just feels like a pinterest board of a book - all promise and vibes, like the author would probably word it. Sorry.
