3.5 out of 5 stars? Maybe.
I would have given this a much higher rating if it had given me what I really wanted: information on why she married the Prince of Monaco. It talks about how they wrote letters, and I really wish those letters were released to give some understanding of how they fell in love, and I'd even have liked more information of their married life together as rulers. To be this book seemed to even gloss over the Wedding of the Century.
This is a great book for information about Grace Kelly's early life and career though.

Rating purely based on style/mechanics, as I did feel like the author was a little too defensive and overly subjective in his narrative at times. Grace Kelly, on the other hand, gets 5/5 every time.

This biography of Grace Kelly includes interviews the author conducted with Kelly, and quotes many of her friends and co-stars. It does get bogged down in the analysis of Kelly's movie roles and storylines while glossing over and condensing details of her life after she left Hollywood. Spoto quotes lines of Grace's movies to illustrate points about her acting, but it's not conveyed well on audio. It's unfortunate as clips from the actual movies would have made a great addition to this book.

There were parts of this book that were engrossing, and made me love Grace Kelly more and more. However, parts of it read like a glorious ode, and years (decades) of Grace's life are skimmed over. If this is because the family was not forthcoming with interviews and information, then perhaps he should have called the book "High Society: the professional life of Grace Kelly" and limited it to her professional life. Copious details of her early tv appearances (and plots of her movies) are included, but so little about her adjustment to married royal life is included. A good book, but definitely not excellent as a look at GRACE.

I was quite tempted to give this book two stars instead of three. I gave it an average rating because I think it might be a good reference for someone who is writing a term paper about Grace's movie career. My biggest disappointment with this book is that there's barely any details about Grace's post-cinema life, which is the main reason I read this. I wanted to read about how she adapted to a new life as a head of state in a foreign land, and maybe some details about how she raised her children. These details are not to be found here.
There was also a lot of content that I felt was mere filler, such as the summaries of her movies and plays. If I wanted to read such material, I can do an internet search for them or watch the movies myself. These summaries made the book drag along and towards the end, I began to skim through.
Because of the primary emphasis on her film career, I feel that the title of this book is a bit misleading. 'The Films of Grace Kelly' would've been more apt.
