Should be required reading for all Americans!

Brilliant and inspiring, McCullough captures the essence of the American Spirit!

I didn't technically "finish" this but as it was a collection of McCullough's speeches from over the past several years, I got the gist of it when my due date came up at the library. It was nice to sit and read some positive thoughts on America - our past, our future and then some. Each word was still relevant even for the speeches that happened over twenty years ago. I might pick it up again once the request list goes down at the library. It was a nice change of pace and a good reminder that we are always changing and growing as a country, but at the same time we still face many of the same struggles we have always faced - and that is okay because we keep going.

Perfect. I only wish there were more speeches! The one thing I cannot believe is the student who didn't know the original thirteen colonies were all on the East Coast. Absurd.

A quick, fun, smattering of some of McCullough's speeches. It got me excited to read more history, especially some of his books.

A delightful little volume that, in words of inspiration, pays homage to our founding fathers and calls us to turn to their example as we seek to carve out the future of our country.

David McCullough is one of those writers who has been on my "to-read" list for far too long. He writes historical nonfiction (a genre I adore), and- from the excerpts of his works I've had to read for school & such- seems gifted with words. Still, I have many excuses good reasons for having not read him thus far, chief among which is the fact that his books are generally looooooooong, and it's hard to find unabridged audio versions. So, I was delighted to find this little collection of his speeches. Not only are they on fascinating historical subjects, but I think it's an excellent idea to put inspiring, great speeches in my mind, to give me something to which to aspire! So, yeah, I enjoyed this book and I'll definitely be reading other works by David McCullough in the future!
informative inspiring slow-paced

An excellent collection of historical speeches from an extraordinary American.

Exceptional read of various speeches given my the author. Profound thoughts on America and what makes us and how we are in danger of losing our identity unless we seek knowledge and read.
