Very predictably, Jaclyn Moriarty has made me laugh, cry and feel every emotion possible in this book. The Kingdoms and Empires series has all been beautiful, but this one was my favourite of all. Esther is such a great character and I loved every twist and turn this book took me on.

appreciate how this one in particular (but also all these books) validate kids who notice something's Not Right and try to bring it up with an adult and get talked down because damn, those kids were/are probably right!!

More juvenile/childish and also modern-feeling than I had hoped.

A slow burner and massive book for kids but I really enjoyed it in the end.

I was surprisingly charmed, captivated, and delighted by this middle grade novel! I was a mega fan of Jaclyn Moriarty's YA novels as a teen and am glad her writing appeals to all ages.
The book touches on things that I assume appear in Kingdoms & Empires #1 and #2 but I didn't feel like I was reading out of order, really.
Esther is a lovely, well crafted heroine and her narration feels very true to life.
