I had been waiting a while to read it, which turned to be a little of a mistake, because I went into this a little bit desoriented, but I found my way back into it quickly.

Despite me loving Luc so much, I must say that what is missing there is the dive into his character a bit deeper. He went through a lot of shit, yet the vulnerability is missing to some extent. We've had lots of it with Evie -- of course, since she is the main character, yet Luc is occupying a huge portion of the book, so I missed the act of breaking the surface with him. That being said, I'm such a huge fan of his and I wish he could be my boyfriend LOL

What I really like is the evolution of the plot going, and how it progresses and the way we, as the readers, learn more and more of the world. I liked it a lot and me having finished it so quickly is, I think, a tell-tale sign of it :3

It’s book review time, and today I’m looking at The Burning Shadow by Jennifer L. Armentrout.
This is book 2 of The Origins Trilogy, a spinoff of Armentrout’s Lux series, telling the story of Evelyn Dasher, a regular girl who discovers her entire life is a lie.

Book 2 continues Evie’s exploration of her real identity as she grows closer and closer to Luc, the sexy boy who will do anything to keep her safe. He’s an anti-hero and misunderstood bad boy, and absolutely in love with her.

As they navigate their relationship, a deadly, flu-like virus spreads among the human population. Rumors start, stating that the Luxen are responsible. The country falls into chaos, tearing itself at the seams. But that’s not all…someone’s after Evie, and they want her dead.

It’s a race to figure out what the virus is all about and who are these people who keep coming after Evie. Will they be able to figure it out in time before the world falls apart?

Although this book started a little slow for me, it ramped up and became impossible to put down. The last quarter of the book had me reading late into the night and dreaming of what was going to happen next. And, of course, Luc’s unapologetic willingness to sacrifice anything or anyone to keep Evie safe had me swooning like a schoolgirl!

I already have book 3 in my hands to see how it all ends.

I recommend this to anyone who likes

✅Alpha males
✅Steamy romance
✅Mysterious government agencies
✅Coming-of-age tales

Not recommended for younger readers because of sexual content and darker themes.

Happy Reading Book Buddies!

Genial.

Holy alien babies!!! I don’t know where to begin.. gah this book made me feel so many feelings and I don’t know what to do with them.. seriously!

Evie still processing the revelations of who she is and her complicated feelings for Luc but strange things are happening, humans are falling sick from a virus that seems to be being spread by the Luxen.

Ok so this book had so much action, I was on edge for the entire read, it was one of those very rare and awesome times that I just couldn’t predict what was going to happen next and it was intense!

I flipping love Luc! I think maybe more than Daemon now which is just mind-blowing, but he’s such a unique character, all mysterious and he is such a sweetheart with Evie but also a freaking badass! I mean there is one scene and I was like wooh!!!!

It's been a slow reading year for me and this one has taken me weeks to finish, but I love it and I can't wait for the next installment. Especially after that ending!

2 stars because when I put my mouse over the three stars choice it said I liked it which I can in fact confirm I did not. I buddy-read this one with my BF and she and I who both love the Lux series were so disappointed that I can't guarantee I'll even finish this series.

1. This book did not need to be 429 pages. I would argue that at least 250 of those pages were annoying fluff that did not add to the story and rather made me dislike most the characters significantly.
2. CLICHE. So much of this story was so cliche it hurt my head rolling my eyes so hard. You know when you think they won't do that because it would be too obvious... well don't worry that happened over and over again.
3. Killing characters that I actually liked and leaving twatty characters I didn't made this read even worse.
4. A super dumb cliffhanger that wasn't surprising if you have ever read any of JLA's past stuff.

I am sad because I love the Lux world and the first book was interesting and getting to know the characters wasn't bad but this story took all the warm fuzzies I had going back into this world and smothered them with a pillow.

I liked the direction the plot went but for some reason I didn’t feel the chemistry between Evie and Luc. Personally, I feel like reading Evie is the same as Kat’s POV. I honestly wouldn’t be able to tell their voices apart, their characters are so similar.
There was also a very Covenant-like moment in this book but I thought Covenant was better.
I do want to know what happens so will continue with the series.
Kudos to JLA for her messages though - seat belt safety, consent, and overall discrimination.
