This was far superior than Temptation was - you have a better and more mature internal dialogue, and don't have to deal with Penny interacting with her young friends. James is just more of an interesting character than Penny is.
If you're looking to read Temptation (Penny's POV of this series), don't. Start with Obsessed (James's POV). It may be new and you'll have to wait for the next books, but I guarantee you will not be annoyed with the heroine as much in Obsessed.

The Hunted series is what made me fall in love with Ivy Smoak, and her work. I had read a book previously by her several years ago, and I enjoyed it, but it led me to forgetting about her. Ever since I read the Hunted Series, I haven’t been able to put her work down, so imagine my delight when I found out she was writing Temptation from James Point of view. I have always been a huge fan of reading a book from different perspectives. I am one who believes there is always two sides to every story, and I feel in order to be able to truly understand a book you need both sides.
I thought I loved James Hunter before but seeing things from his point of view made me fall in love with him even more. With Obsessed you get to delve deeper into James struggles, and overall, it helps you understand James even more. I especially loved his inner turmoil as he juggled dating a student. This book does end with a mild cliffhanger (can we call it a cliff hanger when we know how the story ends?) and as usual I am wanting the next book now. This book had me feeling all the emotions, including the hatred I always have felt for Isabella. I loved the reference that Obsessed made to the event that happened in Empire High Betrayal and made me wonder even more how James handled it in his later years. This book was everything I didn’t know I needed, and reminded me why James should be my favorite.
With every book Ivy writes, her writing gets better and better. She just has this way of drawing you into the world that she builds, and makes you feel like these characters are real life people. I will forever support her, and her work and cannot wait for future releases.

what the heck???
Ok, I usually LOVE Ivy Smoak’s books but this one is just too much for me, and not in a good way…the back and forth about what a horrible person he is and all his secrets, UGH!!!! Then the cliffhanger at the end…no bueno!!!!! I can usually read books in a couple hours, this one took me over a week because it just wasn’t keeping my interest, I almost DNF’d it SO MANY TIMES!!!!

I was bored.
This book is written from James’ POV and all he talks about is how obsessed he is with Penny.
I didn’t realise that this book was part of a series so that might be why I wasn’t really interested in this story.
They only just meet and they’re instantly in love/lust. They go out two or three times but they don’t actually know anything at all about each other.
I did want to know about James’ past but I was just bored and I didn’t want to continue.
I might still try a different book by this author but this one wasn’t for me.

Update: the problems I had with this book's listing have since been fixed. However, my review stands as a result of what occurred when I read it.
Review 11/17/2021:
This book was better than I was expecting. It was actually not bad seeing James's side of things, but I honestly liked Penny's side better. It's been a while since I've read Temptation, but I thought the mystery of what happened in James's past was a little more acceptable and readable in that context. Having read Temptation so long ago, my experience with this book was "why won't you remind me why Isabella is so bad and why he left New York in more detail?" This was unpleasant given we were seeing everything from the perspective of the person that it isn't a secret to. As a result, Penny's perspective was more palatable and actually intriguing to me (went back and read some of Temptation to remember). Still, it was nice to know more of what was happening "behind the scenes" that we didn't get to see before.
To be honest, if I'd realized that this book was just the him perspective of Temptation I probably wouldn't have entered for a copy, but sadly it was not clear to me in the book description (either that, or I was being dense, but looking at it's Goodreads page, it is honestly not clear in the book description if you don't scroll to see the author's review). I honestly thought I was getting another, original steamy professor-student romance from Ivy Smoak and I'm disappointed that I didn't get it, which is probably coloring my review. Particularly since I'm kind of over the reading the same book again from a different perspective "thing" that some authors are starting to do. It feels like too much of a money-grab to me.

I loved reading this story from Penny's point of view. But reading it through the tortured soul of James gives you a whole new perspective. Absolutely loved it.
