Defying Evil: How the Italian Army Saved Croatian Jews During the Holocaust
Benjamin Wood
A very well-researched and thorough book, exploring little known nuances of World War II. It addresses the Italian reluctance to get behind Hitler's anti-Jewish crusade, while on the surface aligning themselves with fascism and nationalism, the even more brutal Croatian Ustasha regime, and the efforts by Italians and Tito's partisans to help shield and protect Jews from being slaughtered.
What's important I think to take from this history lesson is that even events that seem black and white like World War II are more nuanced. Italians may have been our enemies, but they were not committed to the same sort of racial purity that Hitler was promoting. And nationalism, tribal battles, and communism versus capitalism were as much a part of the European war as anything else.
