There was quite a bit of fighting and death but it was a very fun, exciting, and quick read.
Long John Silver was a great character. Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean is a lot like Silver - a witty and extremely slippery survivor that is only out for himself.
I can easily see why this is considered a classic. It has a memorable protagonist in Jim Hawkins who is coming of age, with a great set of pirate villains. Great characters mixed with solid themes of good vs. evil, greed, and travel/adventure you just can’t go wrong.
4 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pacing is weirdly rushed at the end. Never understood the appeal of Long John Silver, which is what the second half of the book hinges on.
I had initially read this book many years ago and revisited it via an audio book. Published in 1883, Stevenson's use of the English language is superb and I found myself pausing and looking up words that are not often used in more current writing. As to the story, not only an adventure but a glimpse into the world of pirates, how they spoke, the comradeship, betrayals etc. Of all the characters Stevenson used only one was female, Jim Hawkins mother and only at the beginning of the story. With this in mind, the book during the time it was written in my opinion would have been geared towards the young male reader.
I think all the seafaring terminology put me off reading this for far too long. It's a great story, and you can see where modernity's notion of pirates gets most of its cues. Loved Silver. He's everything you could want in the villain pirate--clever, charming, wicked, and wily.

3.75 stars. The language was tough to understand in several places. Old English plus pirate. lol. It was a fun adventure story, but the ending was anti-climactic and felt rushed. Glad I read it though. Now I know where Long John Solver, shiver my timbers, and other things came from.
