Luckily I've read some Kingfishers before, so despite early on "That paladin smelling of gingerbread just won't get out off my mind" and "I'm nowhere good enough for her" from both sides, I kept on going.
This paid off big time, as there's just so much humour and hilarious dialogue for my sense of humour!
Little lines like the following had me grin and chuckle along the way (not an exact quote, but something like this):
"I absolutely won't allow a bloodbath at this hour" - "We could wait till the morning..."
I loved the two weird and somehow broken main characters. The perfume master who never got the actual master title, who read from her previous life, and the paladin who lost his god.
They felt so authentic, and I enjoyed the awkwardness so very much, especially as it fit perfectly with their past and characters. One who's trying to be independent and doesn't trust men anymore, and one who doesn't trust himself because he could go berserk at any time, but also has a very strong helper complex. I felt so bad and yet so entertained by their struggle to act normal around each other.
The side characters and world were also a lot of fun, and despite some darkness and traumatic problems in the past, for me it's definitely a cosy read!

I really loved the depiction if the paladins, and of their relationship with each other.
I have read Swordheart before, and it was a pleasure to come back to the world and feel it connected !
A bit strange that the romance dynamic between the main characters read similar to Swordheart (definitely different in the details, but the structure is similar), but not a problem if you like that dynamic (it's like a good retelling of a well loved trope).
And I got to see Zale again, who is one of my favorite secondary characters ever. Diving again in the world, and meeting more of the White Rat people is definitely worth it !
It could have been 5 stars for me (again, the theme speaks to me so much !), but there is a tad too much references to sex for me. It's not overwhelming (I wouldn't call it a spicy book at all, and it happens mainly about two characters genuinely and wholesomely in love with each other), but I would happily have made without it . However, it's really just a matter of personal taste and the whole book was a pleasure to read !
I'm really excited to read the other two books because I definitely didn't had enough of those broken paladins and I'm very interested in finding out how the other characters' voices will convey this !
