Probably 4 and 1/2 or even 5. It's one of those incredible Brubaker/Philips books where the VO is written in a way that informs, builds character, and never feels like a burden. Give me more!

“What the hell happened to you?”

“Nothing... I happened to someone else.”

Man, there's just no one else doing what Ed Brubaker and Sean Philips are doing with comics right now.

These aren't after school specials by any means, but they do strike me as being very relevant to this moment.

Ex-Cointel infiltrator quits the FBI, becomes a beach bum private eye until his past catches up with him and he stumbles on a CIA drug smuggling operation. I feel like they hint that the sequels might touch on Gladio stuff (though I mean who knows, it's a mainstream comic book––are you even allowed to talk about that in America?).

Another tense outing by Brubaker and Phillips. Good mystery here, with a story that grows slowly more intriguing and mysterious, and then boom, the end comes rushing your way. Great art. Great storytelling.

Reckless is a crime noir by ED BRUBAKER and SEAN PHILLIPS, first published in 16 december, 2020 and the first installment of the series by the same name.

The plot follows Ethan Reckless, former undercover FBI operative once posting as a 60's radical. In 1981 los angels when we caught up with him he is a surfer dude who owns a dilapidated movie house. He is also a secret gun-for-hire. Your troubles are his.. But, for the right price. When a fugitive from his old radical student days, who was also his lover, reaches out for help - to kill for a fortune. He stretched out his hand to help. What is ethan getting himself into? Who is playing who? On the other hand he must face the thing he fears the most.. His past. While exploring our MC's mental ambiguities and unveiling mysteries after mystery let yourself drown in 80's los angels.

I am personally an avid reader of this genre but this was an experience totally distinguished from my anterior experiences of reading fictions of this genre. From page 2 of this graphic novel i was in love with the art. The aesthetic is vintage - make you feel like you are ambling in sun-drenched los angels in 80's. Story is pretty straightforward and is up for a light-read. Tho the ending is abrupt and caught me off-guard. Really loved it. Now, i should devour the other issues of this series.
