Ripped through this in about 48 hours because I was so immediately drawn into the world. *almost* upset there isn’t a sequel because I love the characters, but I do appreciate not having to wait for a conclusion.

Some of the most insufferable writing I’ve read, I gave it over 100 pages bc I was traveling and my travel companion told me to stop reading bc I was so irritated. I was hoping for something sapphic that was good for once but I’ve never once found something that didn’t feel trite or mildly to explicitly abusive which supposedly this is enemies to lovers but it appears it’ll a Stockholm Syndrome made cutesy.

GORGEOUS ART inside and out AND this book is literally just therapy for broken and abused kids in a power hungry, cruel, broken world that can be fixed and salvaged despite the odds. This is so much therapy and love (though often displaced) and grief wrapped into one book for the monster girls and the girls who had their opportunities stolen despite being raised for it and boys who are too gentle hearted and free spirited, as many mistakes as they make make. This is for those who feel like they’re not enough and who keep loving the wrong people and come to a slow yet crashing realization that there is good in the world and some of it can be yours and you deserve it despite all you may have done.

as far as I can tell, this book is not racist!! Get any further than 80 pages in and you will see it’s not the skin that dictates the tension, it’s the abilities and history that are distinctly fantasy beyond region. Diversity in books matters, especially when showing a range of character dynamics in people of color, and the main cast (royals) are highlighted in a confident, warm light that is deserved of kids who survived the horrors and stress of an orphaned kingdom and grow up

A book with an interesting premise and nothing else. Slow pacing, dull characters, disjointed writing and simplistic politics.
