This story twisted darker than I expected it to, and the quoted description on the front by Chloe Gong as “feral and tender” is definitely true. But that tenderness comes through so sweet, especially once you hit the half way mark, and the found family has begun to be found, that it plays off the dark violence beautifully. I fell in love with the characters, and thought it took me a little while to understand and connect places to names, once I did I loved the political tension aspect as well. The queer romance was a perfect embellishment to the story, without it becoming the main feature. It didn’t feel as though the characters rushed past their phase of distrust like so many stories seem to do. Mix didn’t drag the distrust on for too long, but also gave the characters time to have moments together and understand each other, so all of the developing relationships felt real. Really enjoyed it, would definitely recommend!!

DNF this book. Blood witches made no sense to me. The book was very gruesome and un-enjoyable. I made it about 25% through before giving up.

Tbh I thought I’d give up on this book after the first hundred pages, but I’m beyond glad I stuck it out. Sobbed my eyes out and it made me think about some stuff I didn’t want to think about.
