In February I had a long weekend, and decided to pick up something that I could easily binge. The Ones We Burn fit that need precisely. The story follows Ranka, a blood witch who is chosen to marry the prince of thier land to secure the treaty between witches and humans. It features a lesbian relationship that was super fun to root for, as well as some intriguing writing. Unfortunately, the book seemed to be published before it was ready. The world was not fully fleshed out, and parts of the magic system / political system did not make sense. That being said, it was quite addicting to read and I'd pick up something from this author in the future!

I debated between two and three stars, because I know part of my issue is my increasing lack of patience with YA as a genre. But I believe even with that, two stars is merited.
I can see the love put into it, and I understand it's a debut, but there were far too many clumsy choices. Hopefully they can be learned from.

A solid start to what I hope could be a series and I'd be very much excited to see it continue. The story has magic, action and adventure and the most beautiful love story.

sooo i actually READ THE BOOK, unlike a lot of these reviews…… and it was wonderful. fantasy is not typically my genre, but i felt this book was so easy to follow and get lost in. i was rooting for these kids the whole time. excellent job, becca!
