The writing & storytelling methods were subpar compared to what Holly Black has previously published. Oak and Wren's characterizations simply seemed like knock-offs of Cardan and Jude while their relationship and personal journey's seemed forced.
Overall, I struggled to get through this book and this duology didn't feel necessary. It's very clear Holly Black will be publishing another spin-off following Nicasia and these books were simply a bridge to get there.

This book was so fun and tense and crazy. This is exactly why Holly Black is my favourite author ❤ The characters were so loveable and unique I loved them all. Oak was an incredibly interesting main character to read about and to see his perspective on things was really cool. Absolutely loved this book. ❤❤❤❤

In all honesty, I don't really remember that much from The Stolen Heir, the first book in the duology, but this book was so much better. I think partially because a lot of the basic plot was laid out in the first book (which made it drag in terms of characters and things happening), so this book was able to move things along faster. I liked that we got to see Oak's point of view and feel like the characterization of his growth/self realization was interesting and relatable. I also loved that we got to see more of the Greenbriar family dynamics, including Jude and Cardan.
So anyway, if you see me colored blue, you'll know why.
