I really enjoyed the beginning, but it was definitely a book that I was constantly dreading to pick up again, partly because of the themes it discusses. That’s not a critique of the book, but I thought it should be mentioned, onto some actual critiques, the book did feel like it needed another round of editing in terms of writing and pacing. Additionally, I really don’t understand how the ending is supposed to be satisfactory. The chapter that Hal has with Henry at night gave me nothing, as well as the last paragraph of the book as a whole. It also didn’t help that I didn’t really keep track of who Richard and Robert were since their names were so similar. My other complaint is that it seems like Hal didn’t actually grow at all, and there was no comeuppance for him being a shitty person.
