This was a rough one. Challenging to read but beautifully written. I didn’t love it but it was really good. One of those. I’m glad I read it.

TW: incest, explicit sex, drug addiction, eating disorders, self-harm, I could go on. Interesting premise; wretched execution. I made myself finish this to see how far into the Henriad the story meandered (not even to the end of Henry IV, Part 1 by my estimation). So, so many horrible, unlikable people behaving inexplicably in this book, most of whom were named Henry. I never figured out who the important Richard actually was. Second star is for some memorable turns of phrase.

A good read for lovers of the Henriad. Makes me want to read the plays again. That being said, it's a beautifully realized character study that doesn't cling too tightly to the plays.
