slow-paced

It really felt like the author took slow burn romance and thought let’s apply it to the whole book. I read this for a bookclub and wouldn’t have finished it otherwise.

Meh, the plot beats feel like a paint by numbers of other romantasy books. I also don't believe Oraya's journey to caring/trusting Raihn. It felt like it happened too fast with not enough evidence of the growth on the page.

This book was the epitome of 5 stars is a feeling. This book made me FEEL things. The build up of Raihn and Oraya's relationship just felt different than other enemies to lovers. It felt so real. Their bond and relationship from enemies,  to alliances, to possibly more was done beautifully. It did not feel rushed and the entire thing made sense. Often books feel like they are jumping from enemies to friends with no real reasoning. You could really see their relationship change, but also the background as to why. It was also shown through actions, and not just the characters thoughts or feelings.
I honestly didnt care for this book much when I started. Suddenly the trails began and I was hooked into the story line. Everything really picks up and it begins moving quickly. The political storyline was done really well, and we gain enough background knowledge of the politics, and world without feeling overwhelmed.
There were quite a few plot twists towards the end and I honestly did not expect most of them. I love an unpredictable plot twist.
The writing style was very easy to follow and enjoyable. I can't wait to continue the series.

4.5 stars

I feel like if you are new to fantasy, this is a great book to start with. The world building isn’t super complex and the characters' backgrounds are easy to understand. This is a vampire hunger games story. Different clans of vampires enter into a tournament to win a gift from the goddess Nyaxia. The trials are really fun to read, and you are brought into the action right away.

Oraya is an extremely strong, resilient human who competes in the tournament to gain powers like her adoptive vampire king father has. She meets Raihn, who decides to partner with her for one of the trials. However, his motive for the competition is kept hidden. Romantic tension builds between them, and it is really fun to read. They are a great pairing.

This book is fast-paced and kept me interested the entire time. The ending took me a bit by surprise. This book is similar to other romantasies I have read, but it is just a fun time. Can’t wait to pick up the second book in this duology.
