Struggled to get into it at first but it really picked up its pace about halfway through. I really enjoyed the trials but I felt like there were a few plot holes and not sufficient world-building:
- Oraya’s heritage (yes it will probably be explained in the next books)
- The issue with the bloodborn clan?
- Oraya’s magic isn’t explained
- Septimus has the potential for a strong character arc but this isn’t explored
- There’s no real explanation for the trials
- There’s not a great explanation of the different magical powers
We explore Oraya’s complex feelings towards Vincent but we don’t really see any depth. It’s hard to believe that she chooses Raihn over Vincent. It felt like we needed more exploration, or development in her rebellion against Vincent or acknowledgment of his abhorrent actions.
The ending felt really rushed. It had some great potential but Raihn’s character arc seems to be completely quashed. A marriage? It would feel more appealing if there was more depth and explanation for this. Uniting of the clans could potentially change the future of the kingdom but it felt very surface level.
Besides the above criticisms, really enjoyed this book. It had the plot, interesting characters and some great fight sequences. I enjoyed the way it was written and I like when books evoke emotion so for this I would rate the book 3.5 stars.
Looking forward to continuing the series!

I couldn't put this down. Games and trials but with vampires. Our FMC Oraya is a human set on winning the Kejari in hopes to granted a wish from the god Nyaxia. In a fight to the death with vampires, the odds are stacked against her. This book had everything i could have wanted and left me with my mouth open staring at the wall.
