Carissa has quickly evolved into one of my favorite authors, and Crowns of Nyaxia is just so good.

And to think I started this book thinking I wouldn't enjoy it since vampires are the focus. Oh, how wrong I was, and I'm not afraid to admit it.

I truly loved this book, couldn't read it fast enough, and immediately went to the second one.

I haven’t read a fantasy romance in a while and this book was a good comeback (; The story is very intriguing and the characters interesting. The vampire characteristics were well portrayed, and along with all the violence felt very believable. My only critic is the repetition of certain words or phrases that sometimes came off as annoying instead of cementing the moment. I also felt very lost when we were talking about the different vampire houses, but hopefully that’ll become more clear in the second book. Because it felt like the mc had an understanding of them and their history, but the reader was kept in the dark so all those terms just flew over my head. I know books like to show more then tell, because that is “better storytelling”, but sometimes we just need a bit of telling. Other than those remarks I really enjoyed myself with this book and will certainly read the second one! (:

“And love, understand, is sharper than any stake.”

Vampires meet death trials. Set in a world where vampires rule and trials determine fate, Carissa Broadbent delivers an entertaining story steeped in death, power, and unexpected tenderness, with a dash of human blood.

Did the plot hold depth, complexity, and layers? Not entirely. But the worldbuilding is immersive, even if the emotional payoff doesn’t always land. Above all, I kept reading because I was invested in the characters.

Vincent and Oraya's dynamic is endearing and showcases an undeniable found bond. Raihn swoops in with strength that seeps into the atmosphere enlightening Oraya and igniting a sense of curiosity. Not only is she skeptical of Raihn, but she is even more hesitant with his sunshine companion, Mische. All she has ever known was Vincent and now she finds herself confused and yearning.

"You cannot accomplish anything in this world without power," he said. "And power requires sacrifice, focus, and ruthlessness."

There is no doubt that inspiration was drawn from some big names in the genre. It shines through moments of character interactions and growth. Those who are well versed in the genre will likely sense where much of the inspiration comes from.
"Does it...tickle?" He chuckled. "In a way."

While this book doesn’t reinvent the genre, it’s a solid pick for fantasy readers who enjoy dark atmospheres, romantic tension, and found family dynamics. Moreover, the story managed to surprise me with a gripping twist.
