After sitting with this book for a while I feel I may have rated it too harshly at the beginning.

The imagery this book created was beautiful, it’s an easy page turner and it reignited my love for the power of the ocean and the secrets it keeps.

CHECK CONTENT WARNINGS BEFORE READING!

As a lover of dual timelines and horror, this one was a big hit for me! It did start a bit slow, but once it picked up I was hooked.

As the first line of thai review says, check content warnings before reading. There are some topics discussed in detail that can definitely be triggering.

Audiobook: this was a 2.5 rounded down. The narration was good  but i felt the story was jumping around too much for me to follow (why was it always Chapter 1??). I was looking forward to a wintery gothic ghost story and it is a bit of that but the ending was disappointing and there were quite a few lose ends and challenging plot points that didn’t seem to make sense. I was hoping for something more along the lines of The Bear and the Nightingale. Also I think there could be triggers re: sexual assault.

This book wasn't great. It was predictable. The more I think or talk about this book the worse I think it was. I only finished it because it was short and I could smash it on a 12 hour flight.

It had quite a bit of detail about the rapes so be emotionally prepared if you read it. That detail didn't seem to reflect the woman's feelings on it either. More about how the men treated her. The main character is systematically raped by multiple men. In parts I felt like it sympathised towards the rapists, offering explanations for why this happened. It was also victim blaming as other characters blame the victim for not being able to let go and the character isnt allowed to move on or get back to her loved ones until she does.

"I know what I saw...It can't be a coincidence.
Maybe I was wrong not to say anything to the others about the woman. About the ghost. I felt ashamed, and I worried about their reaction.
But it seems we're not longer exploring the Ormen.
We are being hunted."

A chilling (literally and metaphorically) tale of a whaling ship in the Arctic. Two female protagonists find themselves trapped on the Ormen ship; Nicky the daughter of the shipping company owner has been kidnapped and is travelling from Dundee to the Arctic in the late Victorian era and Dom, an urban explorer, is on board the beached shipwreck in the present day. A history of Scottish whaling ships, Scottish and Icelandic folklore and paranormal occurrences are woven in to the enthralling narrative. The author has produced a complex exploration of the impact of patriarchy and trauma on people and places. The tension of the remote and dangerous location combined with disturbing events builds to a terrifying conclusion. An intense, dark and feminist tale of revenge, for fans of Laura Purcell and Stacey Hall, it's also reminiscent of Michelle Paver's Dark Matter.
