I really enjoyed this book! The writing was descriptive and atmospheric. I felt like I was in the story or watching a movie in my head. There were past and present chapters told from the POV of two different characters. I was connected to the characters and felt what they were going through. I was intrigued throughout the whole story and wanted to know what was happening/what was haunting this ship.
The reason why it lost a half star was because there were mentions of TikTok and even though it had relevance to the story it brought me out of it at those points. Otherwise I was immersed the whole time! I am definitely going to pick up another book by C.J. Cooke

I was most impressed by how scary/eerie/haunting this book actually was. After a slow start, it picked up speed quickly and I couldn’t put it down. After a big, cool twist at the end - I was unfortunately let down by the way the author decided to wrap things up. Instead of keeping with the overall tone of the novel, he flipped to giving the reader a “nice” ending. It ruined the whole thing for me since it felt so off from everything else. I was literally rolling by my eyes as I read the final chapter. HOWEVER, it was a good enough read for 95 percent of the book. It was a story about a woman who is captured and made prisoner on a whaling ship in 1900 - and a woman who explores the same ship, now shipwrecked, in 2023. Violence, ghosts, evil mermaids, and creepy folklore … all wrapped into a surprisingly believable book.
