Tropes: omegaverse, fated mates, hate to love, paranormal romance, slow burn
I wanted to dive into my first werewolf book so of course I consulted my bestie Kat and she recommended this book. I couldn't put this book down because I was having so much fun reading it. It is a slow burn with a hero who fucks up so he spends a lot of the book chasing her and I eat that up. Will definitely be continuing with this series!

Surprisingly enjoyable fated mates romance.
The world is set in the modern day, but the wolf packs live in their own territory and mix with humans as little as possible. Pack law is strict. Lone females who are unmated or otherwise unprotected by male relatives are given menial kitchen or laundry duty, no phones, no contact at all with humans, not taught to drive etc. It's very limiting.
Una is an orphan. Her leg was damaged as a child when she was attacked by a rogue wolf, so now she limps. In her late 20's, she's the eldest of a small group of lone females who share living quarters on the pack land. She is clever and manages to procure things she and her friends need by going under the radar to stealthily trade honey, mushrooms and small craft items with the humans at a nearby town's farmer's market. She is brave, but very shy. She is used to being ignored.
At the beginning of the book it's as if a switch flips on inside her and she suddenly knows that she is mated to the pack Alpha Killian. Uncontrolable hormonal urges and the instinct to mate pushes her wolf to the fore for the very first time and she shifts. Unfortunately, her wolf is small and weak-looking and she gets her butt kicked by a much more dominant female in the group.
Killian is the strongest man and wolf by a long margin. He's cocky, bossy and demands everyone's respect and allegiance. He's not mean though, just distant and entitled. So when Una makes a scene in front of the whole pack and says she's his mate, he rejects her out of hand, not believing that someone so weak and insignificant could possibly be Alpha's mate. Even though he feels a little uneasy about the situation, he tells her she's not his mate, which humiliates her in front of everyone.
With the help of the pack's mystical elder, Una manages to remove the mating bond from herself, but it's still there inside Killian, growing more powerful and more undeniable every minute.
What follows is about 200-odd pages of the best grovel by a male main character ever. Killian has screwed up so badly, and now he knows it. Una doesn't need him (her bond is severed), doesn't want him (the magic allows her to ignore his Alpha's compulsion) and basically hates his guts (because he humiliated her).
So good! Of course, Killian's not so bad underneath it all. He really does want to protect his pack and made rules to achieve everyone's safety first. Una doesn't make it easy for him, even though she's attracted to him, he really has to work hard to get her in the end.
This book contains multiple steamy love scenes.

I almost didn’t mark this as Read on my reading apps because the cover and the title are so embarrassing BUT IT’S GOOD OKAY. We love a man who grovels after he realizes his mistakes.
