Medusa is only spoken of in whispers in the shadowed places in the City of Olympus. Everyone knows that she's Athena's knife hand, the one that Athena sends out when it's time for someone who has displeased Athena to disappear. Medusa is never asked what it is that she wants, or what she craves in life, and no one cares. Athena knows that Medusa owes Athena her life and Athena will use Medusa as she sees fit, and if that means staining Medusa's hands with blood over and over again versus staining her own hands with blood to repay that debt, then to Medusa it's a small hollow price to pay.

That is until the day that Athena sends Medusa after Calypso. She's the mistress of one of Odysseus's politicians who happens to be rather wealthy. Medusa can't see anything that Calypso has said or done to warrant a death sentence, and suddenly she is faced with conflicted feelings on her mission. Those feelings are only deepened when she lays eyes on Calypso and finds herself looking at not only a stunning woman but also one who is very intelligent and cunning, and one who will do whatever she has to survive – including seducing the woman who was sent to be her end.

It has all started as a game to escape but soon it turns into something so much more, real genuine interest. Calypso realizes that Medusa isn't the cold, empty, heartless killer that everyone says she is. And Medusa realizes that Calypso is so much more complicated than her reputation as a ruthless gold-digger suggests.

Sadly, it doesn't matter that together they have finally found something more than either ever thought they could have or that is special beyond words.

Athena is determined to have her blood, and it doesn't matter if together they cross the River Styx, Athena will have her blood one way or another.

Stone Heart by Katee Robert is part of her Dark Olympus series, more of a prequel novella if you will. I have been in love with this series since the very first novel so when I was able to get my hands on this little gem I squed a little bit as I got to know a character who I have always had an interest in, Medusa.

Medusa has always been one of those Greek goddesses who have had me mesmerized. I have always wondered about her and thought that there had to be another story to her and she couldn't be all bad. I hated the bad rap she got just because of her snake-filled hair and I wanted to read a story where she got some happiness in life.

Well, Katee Robert gave us this story here and I have to say that if I didn't love Medusa before, I fell in love with her through this book. And this book is such a wonderful addition to the Dark Olympus series.

I love the chemistry that Medusa and Calypso had together and the way that you could feel how undeniably they were drawn together from the first moment they laid eyes on each other. From that first moment, you knew that these two were meant to be together. And I can honestly say that I didn't mind that this was a little bit of LGBTQIA representation. I love it when authors give us that little bit of representation in their work, especially in settings like this.

Katee did such an amazing job of writing Medusa and my heart broke for her at first having to be under the control of Athena doing her bidding and being nothing more than Athena's assassin. I never felt that at her heart Medusa was an evil person, she was just put into a bad position by a controlling person who didn't want to get her own hands dirty so forced someone else to do her dirty work. And then, when Medusa met Calypso, suddenly everything clicked into place for her and she could see everything that she had ever wanted or craved could be had if she just took this one single chance with this amazing woman standing before her.

I honestly thought that Calypso was going to be another airhead gold-digging mistress who didn't have a single original thought in her pretty little head. And boy was I proven wrong, she's so not what you would think she's going to be at first. Calypso is just trying to make the best of it and survive the only way she knows how to in the harsh light of day and she's just trying to find someone she can trust, love, and know will have her back and help her survive the same way she will for them.

This was one of those books that I never wanted to end. I just wanted to keep reading more and more about Medusa and Calypso's journey to happiness and survival. And I do hope that we will get to see them again in the series, even if it is only as minor characters in other books in the series.

Fun prequel novella that ties in some backstory for prominent side characters Medusa and Calypso. I found the insta-love a little annoying but it was necessary for the length of the book. There's a dash of world building, a dash of spice and overall it's a good quick story that's worth the read if you like the series.
